Mobile phones and tablets have changed how companies communicate with customers. Traditional marketing channels, such as television, radio, newspapers, and billboards, can reach large audiences, but they usually deliver the same message to everyone. Mobile marketing allows Sherwin-Williams to provide personalized and interactive content based on customers’ interests, locations, and painting needs. This is valuable because approximately 91% of American adults own a smartphone (Pew Research Center, 2025).
Increasing Awareness and Sales
Sherwin-Williams can reach customers through mobile applications, social media advertisements, emails, text messages, search advertisements, and push notifications. These channels allow customers to act immediately after seeing a promotion. For example, a customer who sees an advertisement for interior paint can select a link, compare colors, locate a nearby store, and place an order using a smartphone.
The Sherwin-Williams Color Visualizer provides a useful mobile experience. Customers can upload a photograph of a room and virtually apply different paint colors before making a purchase. The company’s Color Expert app also allows customers to explore color collections and order color chips or peel-and-stick samples. These tools reduce some of the uncertainty involved in selecting paint while moving customers closer to making a purchase (Sherwin-Williams, 2026).
Location-based advertisements can inform customers about nearby Sherwin-Williams stores or limited-time sales. QR codes placed on paint displays, brochures, and product packaging can also direct customers to instructional videos, color combinations, product information, or online ordering. These methods connect Sherwin-Williams’ traditional store marketing with its mobile content.
Tablets provide another advantage because their larger screens are useful for color comparisons, project demonstrations, and digital catalogs. Sherwin-Williams employees can use tablets in stores to help customers compare colors and determine which products are appropriate for their projects. Painting contractors can also use tablets to show customers digital color options directly inside their homes.
Creating Customer Relationships
Mobile marketing allows Sherwin-Williams to develop two-way communication with customers. Customers can contact the company through social media, submit reviews, ask questions, and provide feedback about products. This information can help Sherwin-Williams better understand customer needs and improve future marketing messages.
The PaintPerks program can strengthen customer loyalty by providing members with exclusive savings, emails, online ordering, and other benefits. Sherwin-Williams can use information about customers’ interests and purchases to send relevant promotions. For example, someone planning an outdoor project could receive a promotion for exterior paint or supplies. These personalized offers can encourage customers to return to Sherwin-Williams instead of purchasing from a competing retailer (Sherwin-Williams, 2025).
Sherwin-Williams also provides a PRO+ mobile application for professional painters and contractors. The application allows professionals to check inventory at local stores, reorder products, access special pricing, and manage account information. These features make purchasing more convenient and can build long-term loyalty among professional customers who frequently purchase paint and supplies (Sherwin-Williams, 2026).
Addressing Mobile Marketing Constraints
Mobile marketing also presents challenges for Sherwin-Williams. Customers may view frequent texts, emails, and push notifications as intrusive. Small screens can make advertisements difficult to read, while technical differences between devices can affect how applications and websites operate. The company must also protect customer information and comply with privacy and consent requirements. Companies generally need consumer consent before sending automated commercial text messages to mobile phones (Federal Communications Commission, 2026).
Sherwin-Williams can address these concerns through permission-based marketing. Customers should clearly understand what they are agreeing to receive, and every email or text message should provide a simple way to unsubscribe. The company should also limit the frequency of its messages and personalize them according to customers’ interests.
Mobile content should include short headlines, readable text, fast-loading images, and simple buttons. Sherwin-Williams should test its advertisements, websites, and applications across different smartphones, tablets, browsers, and operating systems. The company should also collect only the customer information it needs and clearly explain how that information will be used.
When Sherwin-Williams provides useful mobile tools while respecting customers’ privacy, mobile marketing can increase awareness, simplify paint selection, encourage purchases, and create stronger customer relationships.
